Apr 29 1863.  Before our men can assault Grand Gulf, the town’s batteries must be silenced.  Trying to land troops in the face of that artillery would be senseless.  Adm. Porter is taking his ironclad fleet to bombard the city this morning.  Hopefully, Gen. McClernand’s troops will follow soon.
